How to Build the Kingdom in Your Everyday Life

Throughout His ministry on earth, Jesus gave the disciples a grand mission. They were called to build the Kingdom…

One of my favorite things to do as a kid was playing with Legos. And now with two preschoolers, I’m privileged to relive my childhood once more. I’m amazed at how far Legos have come since I was young. You can literally build just about anything! Every time my daughters begin a new Lego project, I ask them one question, “What are you building?”

Sometimes they know exactly what they’re working on. They have a distinct image in their minds of what they desire the end result to be. Other times, they are simply building to build. Either way, they build piece by piece, brick upon brick. And they hope that whatever they are building will be awesome (and that their sister doesn’t come and knock it down!)

The truth is that we are all building something. Sometimes we have clear goals that we are working towards. And other times, we just hope that whatever we are building will turn out for the best. But we are all working towards something. Maybe we are planning for retirement, working on improving our health, finishing our degree, or simply raising our little ones. In the end, we all have something to build.

The disciples were called to build the Kingdom. They went out into the world, preached in the synagogues and on street corners. They were heavily persecuted and were often seen as lunatics. But none of this mattered because they knew what they were building.

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit. – Ephesians 2:19-22

Most of us aren’t preaching in front of crowds or spending our time in foreign mission fields. So does that mean we aren’t building? Of course not! We are all called to be builders, but we all build in different ways.

For me personally, I am building in my own home. As I home-school my girls and teach them about Jesus, I am building. As I encourage my husband to persevere through tough times, I am building. And as I spend time in prayer, I am building.

We build the Kingdom of God every time we share His love with those around us.

Most building occurs in everyday life. We build the Kingdom every time we comfort those who are hurting or rejoice with those who have gained a recent victory. We build the Kingdom by having deep and meaningful conversations about God with our kids. And we build the Kingdom when we take the time out of our busy schedules to love on or to give godly wisdom to someone who needs it.

Sometimes we feel like we’re not building the Kingdom because we’re not teaching or preaching in front of thousands, but the truth is that often the most productive and life-changing building occurs in deeply meaningful relationships.

God has given us all talents and abilities, and He has placed specific people in our lives to reach. When it comes to building the Kingdom, we all have uniquely valuable roles to play.

How has God asked you to build?

Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. - Mark 10:14
