How to Trust God When It’s Hard (and why you should)

Life can be uncertain at times. To say that our world is in a place of unrest right now is a vast understatement. Things are changing at a rapid pace, and it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to know who to trust. Honestly, I get it. I have found myself on numerous occasions this past couple of months worried about what was in store for my family’s future. Will things ever go back to “normal”? What will this nation become in the aftermath of this pandemic? I don’t know the answers to these questions, but I do know one thing for certain. The only solution in times like this is to place our trust in God. But even though I know this to be true, learning how to trust God when it’s hard isn’t always easy.

When the world is in chaos…

God holds the world in His hands. All of creation belongs to Him, and He rules over the nations. On the surface, it doesn’t always seem this way. Just looking around at the world today, it’s easy to wonder how things reached this place of uncertainty and chaos. But we have to remember that nothing surprises God. He isn’t wondering how this pandemic will play out. He knows the future, and He holds us in the palm of His hand.

For the kingdom is the Lord’s and He rules over the nations. – Psalm 22:28

When the future looks grim…

As we watch the news, read articles, and interact on social media, may we never forget that God wins. The Bible tells us so. It’s so easy to get caught up in the fear. We entertain negative thoughts and opinions that are contrary to the truth of Scripture, and we worry about what tomorrow holds when we can KNOW what it holds based on the truth of God’s Word. God gave us His Word that our future is good. We don’t have to give in to the fear.

These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world. – John 16:33

When life seems uncertain…

God directs our steps and is not surprised by our current circumstances. Life is uncertain right now. There’s no doubt about that. No one really knows what the next year, or even the next month, will bring. In just a few days, we went from our busy lives as usual to the whole world coming to a grinding halt. We are living history in the making, and I can’t help but think about my children. What will their take away be from this whole event? How will they explain this to their children?

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. – Proverbs 19:21 (ESV)

The truth is that the world is watching. How we as Believers respond to chaos, tragedy, and fear matters. We should not look like the rest of the world in how we respond. Do they see our trust in God? Do they see peace in our lives that surpasses all understanding? And will our kids, the next generation, remember their parents living in fear or will they remember us making the choice to thrive in God’s perfect provision and peace?

We have no control over the future or the events of this world, but we do have control over how we respond in faith.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. – Romans 15:13 (ESV)
