What’s in a Name? {There is Power in the Name of Jesus}

I’ve heard it said that people don’t mind talking about God but the name of Jesus makes them uneasy. And honestly, I have found this to be true. Many claim to believe in a distant “God” or creator, but there’s a significant difference between believing in God and bowing the knee to Jesus.

Time and time again, the New Testament tells us to place our trust in the name of Jesus. But why tell us to put our trust in His name? Why not just tell us to trust Jesus?

Imagine that you are the son or daughter of someone famous – perhaps even a great leader or king/politician. Your last name would certainly give you some unique privileges. There would be a great deal of power and responsibility behind carrying the family name. Just by uttering your name, you could make things happen.

The Bible tells us that the name of Jesus is above all other names. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. As a believer, you carry the family name! And with that family name comes power and responsibility.

Through faith in the name of Jesus, this man was healed—and you know how crippled he was before. Faith in Jesus’ name has healed him before your very eyes. – Acts 3:16 (NLT)

The name of Jesus causes demons to flee, brings us healing, sets us free, and restores our relationship with the Father through the forgiveness of sins.

Jesus’ name isn’t to be taken lightly. It is to be honored and praised. As followers of Christ, we have been given the honor of being a part of the family of God and co-heirs with Christ. We have been given a unique authority in Jesus’ name in order to advance the Kingdom and spread the Good News to the world.

It’s important that we always strive to bring honor to the name of Jesus in all that we do. It is by His name that we are saved!

So how do we honor Jesus’ name?

1) We don’t abuse it or take it lightly… and we certainly never use His name as a swear word.

2) We actually use it. God WANTS us to use the authority He has given us in Jesus’ name. He WANTS us to advance the Kingdom and bring His light into a dark world. He wouldn’t have given us the authority to use His name if He didn’t intend for us to use it.

3) We devote our lives to bringing glory to Him. We honor His name when we live for Him and walk in His love. Never forget that we represent the family name in all that we do. We don’t want to dishonor His name by living in a way that wouldn’t accurately represent His heart.

And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. – Acts 4:12
