How to Live Your Life as an Overcomer
Defeated. Overwhelmed. Disenheartened. We’ve all been there. Life has a way of throwing us curve balls when we least expect them. Jesus told us that in this life we would have troubles. So trials and obstacles are simply a part of life. But the Bible also teaches us that we have victory in Christ. God destined us to be overcomers… not to be overcome by life’s struggles. But what does life really look like as an overcomer?

- Overcome evil with good…
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. – Romans 12:21
There is no doubt about it… evil is present in this world. But when it comes to evil, we hold more power than we realize. It may seem like there’s not much we can do, but Romans 12:21 tells us that we have the power to overcome evil… with good. So what does this look like in practice?
If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” – Romans 12:18-20
When someone hurts us, it’s not usually our first instinct to love on them and meet their needs. But this is exactly how we live as an overcomer of evil. Can you imagine the impact we would have if every single Christian in the world actually lived by these verses?
- Overcome darkness with light…
We know that Jesus is the Light of the world. But did you know that He commissioned us to be a light as well?
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:14
These are the words of Jesus… “you are the light of the world.” What an amazing responsibility! When we watch the news, it’s easy to feel like darkness is winning. But does darkness really have the power to overcome light? Truth be told, darkness is simply the absence of light. It holds no power. But light is powerful. It can overcome the darkness in an instant. It simply needs to shine.

If you are the light of the world, then you have the power to vanquish darkness. All you need to do is shine brightly… never allow your light to be hidden!
- Overcome lies with truth…
Do you want to defeat the enemy’s lies? Be armed with the truth! When you know the truth… and I mean REALLY know it… the enemy’s lies have no power whatsoever. Know who you are in Christ. Know the truth about what Jesus really did on the cross for you. And know the truth that the enemy has already been defeated.
When truth reigns in your life, you can be an overcomer when it comes to the enemy’s lies.
- Overcome fear with love…
When it comes to overcoming fear, love isn’t typically the first thing that comes to mind. But the Bible says that fear is overcome by love. Not courage. Not bravery. But love.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear… – 1 John 4:18
God is love. And His love has the power to cast out every fear in our lives. When we have truly been perfected in His love, we can live a life apart from fear itself.
Fear and worry are natural elements of this world. It’s “normal” to worry about finances and our children. It’s “normal” to be afraid of the evils of this world. But the truth is that what is normal in this world, is NOT normal in the Kingdom of God. Our Father did not give us a spirit of fear. The Holy Spirit is far bigger and stronger than anything this world can throw our way.
- Overcome sin and death in Jesus…
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. – Galatians 5:16
Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. – James 4:7
You are a new creation in Christ. You have the power within you (the Holy Spirit) to overcome sin and temptation. Once a slave to sin, you now have the power to say ‘no.’ And when you say no… the devil has to run away.
Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Corinthians 15:54-55 (NLT)
Death was defeated the moment Jesus resurrected from the dead, and the Bible tells us that He was the firstborn among many brothers. You and I inherit the eternal life Christ won for us! We are dead to sin and alive in Christ!
As a child of God, equipped with the Holy Spirit, you are an overcomer. Walk in that truth.
