When God Proves Who He Is: The Power of Your Story
Does Christianity have a future? I recently read an article asking that very question. Our world is rapidly changing. We are taught to question everything. And everyone wants proof. Does God exist? Are the stories of the Bible real? Was Jesus really who He claimed to be?
Unfortunately, tangible proof is hard to come by when it comes to Christianity. Our faith is just that – faith. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of historical evidence for Christ, the Bible, the early church, etc. But there are also a lot of controversies. This also doesn’t take into account the very existence of God. For many, the God of the Bible is simply a fairy tale. Everyone has their reasons for skepticism, but in the end, it usually comes down to a lack of proof. We can’t prove beyond reasonable doubt that God exists. (On the flip side of that, we also can’t prove that He doesn’t…)

As a follower of Christ, I can tell you with full confidence that I believe in the existence of God. How do I know? The answer is simple… my testimony.
Every person on the planet has a story to tell. Maybe it’s one of hurt and pain. Maybe it’s one of joy and laughter. For most of us, it’s probably a little bit of both.
Looking back at my life, I’ve had my share of triumphs and defeats. But even in my darkest days, I can clearly see God’s hand on my life. He brought me out of darkness into the light, renewed my heart and mind, gave me strength and patience when I thought I couldn’t go on, and He gave me joy even in the midst of sorrow. Every amazing thing I have in this life came from Him. Every time I messed up, He brought me through to the other side – stronger than I was before.
When God delivered Israel out of Egypt and led them to the Promised Land, He gave them an amazing and powerful treasure – a story to tell. They would be God’s people – a chosen nation that would be living proof that God is who He says He is. Yes, He gave them the Law of Moses and told them to obey, but it wasn’t just about the rules. He proved to them that He was the one true God, and He did that through their amazing story of deliverance.
Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other. From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. Because he loved your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance, as it is today. – Deuteronomy 4:34-38 (NIV, emphasis added)
God didn’t just give Israel a bunch of rules to follow. He made a covenant with them. He proved Himself to be faithful to His word time and time again… even when they were rebellious and disobedient. It was this story of faithfulness that God wanted the Israelites to pass on to future generations.
Their faith in God was not defined by the Law – it was defined by God’s power and grace. So, never underestimate the power of your story in Christ.
“Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons and your grandsons.” – Deuteronomy 4:9
Our stories are powerful. God’s Word tells us that it is through the blood of Jesus and the power of our testimony that we can defeat the enemy. (Revelation 12:10-11) We can try to prove the existence of God using history or philosophy, but our transformed lives cannot be argued against. I know that God is real because of what He has done in my life as well as in the lives of my family and friends.
If you’ve never had a true encounter with God, I challenge you to seek after Him. The Bible tells us that God will reveal Himself to all those who seek after Him wholeheartedly. (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
When God has proven Himself to you by transforming your life, no other proof is required – and no one can take that proof away from you.
